“From a piece of fiction (short story, section of
novel, or a play) choose a female character on whom to focus, and create a
project that discusses some of the following questions: “What is the author’s
attitude towards her? (how can you tell?) What is your attitude towards
her? How do (at least 2) other
characters view her? How does she view
herself?”
Piece
of work I have chosen: “The Song of Ch’un-Hyang” (74-89)
Basic Information:
·
Pansori-storytelling in musical form,
involves song
·
Author unknown
·
Date of composition unknown
·
Ch’un-Hyang means: Scent of Spring
·
Is a Complex Love Story
·
Struggle of one woman
·
Teaches a lesson
·
She contradicts values of the elite *important*
Author’s attitude towards her:
·
It is hard to tell what the author’s attitude
towards her is since we don’t know who the author is but we can tell somewhat
through the way they describes Ch’un-Hyang and through the way she stays
persistent on sticking by her chastity and love.
·
Maybe the author views her as a beautiful
woman struggling through a time of being away from her man and struggling with
society and what other people want of her.
·
The author is trying to prove a point
through this stubborn, beautiful, faithful character.
My attitude towards her:
·
I see her as persistent in love
·
Faithful
·
Ex: “On heart undivided, faithful to one
husband, one punishment before one year is over, but for one moment I will not
change” (84)
·
Strong for sticking through the beatings
·
Knowledgeable of Confucian duties
·
In opinion, I like this character
because she is very strong and I get this sense of woman femininity from her
when it comes to other men wanting to obtain while she is in love. This is also
because she stuck by her ideals throughout the play. She has a strong-head on
her shoulders.
The governor’s view of her:
·
Thinks she is very beautiful
·
Sees her more as an object
·
Lusts after her
·
Because he was rejected, he demanded she
be beaten: Pg. 83
How chief Kisaeng views her:
·
Sees her as someone who may get her in
trouble/a way to get out of trouble
·
Pretty much thinks Ch’un-Hyang shoulder
obey people in higher positions no matter the girls ideals
·
Ex: “Come on, Ch’un-hyang, do as you are
told! I’m as constant as you are! I’m as chaste as you are! Why are you making
such a fuss about being chaste and faithful? Just for the sake of your virtue,
you pretty little miss, the whole yamen is in trouble and everybody is likely
to lose his job” (81).
How she views herself:
·
She thinks she should stick to her
faithfulness and chastity
·
She says: ‘Even a mighty man like Meng
Ben could not wrest me from determination to stay a faithful wife and keep the
oath...” (82). She sees herself as so in love and faithful that her heart cannot
be moved by even the mightiest of men.
·
Stubborn in love
I will use this outline to form my project
submission. Each section will have a paragraph of its own. This would be
including basic information, but the views of 2 other characters may or may not
be a combined paragraph. I may also add another characters view just to add a
better perception of this female character and the many views others have on
her. I plan to create an understanding of this female character purpose in the
author’s ideas. Especially because the author is unknown, this may be a
challenge.

Hello Kaytee!
ReplyDeleteLooks like we'll be doing similar topics as I am also analyzing the character of Ch'un-Hyang. She is such a strong and interesting female character that I felt that it would have been a waste to not thoroughly analyze her character. I also noticed that there isn't a certain date on which this story was written so it may be more difficult to pinpoint what time period this may have been as I felt that analyzing the role of women in Korean society during whatever time period that this text was written in would give us a better understanding of Ch'un-Hyang's character and how it impacted the audience. I love that you bullet pointed your action plan as it makes it much easier to read and much clearer! I also like that you included examples from the text to back up your thoughts and it seems like it'll make writing your project submission easier to write! It looks like you have and outstanding outline and I can't wait to see what your project will look like and I can't wait to read more from you!
Hello Kaytee,
ReplyDeleteYour action plan is one of the best layouts I have seen yet. You set yourself up very well to get right into your project by laying out very specific notes on what will help accomplish answering your project writing prompt. I believe for this story, "The Song of Ch'un -hyang", that exploring the attitudes of the author, the reader, and the characters in this story is a perfect fit. This story is rich with evidence that lends itself towards biases and attitudes. I think the hardest issue would be getting an authors perspective for this piece as it is almost like folklore in that it is traceable to a century and a few writers but the origin of the story itself is not concrete. For this project, sticking with the attitudes of the characters and what you think about her will make this a very strong written work. I look forward to seeing what you are able to accomplish on your project Kaytee!
Hey Kaytee! I am very impressed with the layout of your project plan. It is very detailed and precise on what you want to write about. I agree on your statement about how the author might view Ch'un-Hyang. It is kind of hard because like you said, we really do not know how he really views Hyang since we do not know the author. But based on your observations, it looks like you are on the right path. I also like how you provided examples, page numbers, and quotes to help back up your evidence. It makes your argument sound more valid and it most likely will help you when you are writing out your project before submission. I hope you found all the material you need for your project and I look forward to reading your point of view and the character's point of view on Ch'un-Hyang. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI really loved the way you broke down each bullet point! (I did my project on this same topic, but on Tartuffe.) I'm very excited to read what you write and where you go with this; it seems like with the way you broke it down, you will have an easy time writing it out. You bring up great points, and I love how each view is different. One thing to maybe add is maybe for the author's attitude/view towards her, what lines/quotes do you feel show this? I'd like to hear how and where you got your views from, it seems like it'd be great to learn and get your perspective!
ReplyDeleteKaytee I really connected with how you organized you whole plan. A big thing about me to write a good paper I have to have a clear plan and actually connect with whatever I am writing about. You show both in your blog post you have very point you want to address and follow it with evidence. Your essay has to be a breeze and if you use this structure in other papers I envy you. I see the connections with the song of Ch'Un-hyang and how she was hell bent on not cheating and she is basically the perfect women. I connect with her loyalty. So just stay loyal to your action plan and it should lead you to success over this paper. I also connect with your seeing that this story has the best chance of finding great evidence to prove any point you are trying to argue. Also don't forget to mention another text to do some slight comparisons pf you point in another text.
